PA Dept. of Probation

East Liberty, Pittsburgh, PA

Status: Completed 2013

Building Type: Office

Area: 11,500 SF

For the new Pennsylvania Department of Probation and Parole District office, the developer chose a site along a quiet street in Pittsburgh's Homewood Larimer area. The location, a former warehouse with a steel frame and masonry walls, provided an open layout ideal for office use. To meet the space requirements, an additional 1,000 square feet was added by infilling the loading dock with a new masonry structure and light gauge roof framing, creating a simple rectangular volume.

The new addition features a weathering steel rainscreen, contrasting with the deep grey-painted masonry of the original building. This design adds an industrial yet refined look. A weathering steel-clad canopy was added to protect the main entries and integrate with the existing façade.

With the state prohibiting window openings, the façade materials were crucial in adding texture and scale. Extensive landscaping was also added between the building and the sidewalk to soften its appearance.
