Otto Milk
Strip District, Pittsburgh, PA
Status: Completed 2011
Building Type: Condominium
Area: 75,000 SF
The Otto Milk Condos have added to the expanding residential market in the Strip District. Originally constructed as The Phoenix Brewing Company before the turn of the century, the Otto Milk building remained vacant for over twenty-five years. The project aims to unify five buildings from different eras into sixty-two ( one, two & three) bedroom condominiums. Some original spaces feature spectacular double-height areas with cast iron columns and ornate capitals, which are being converted into duplex apartments with two-story living rooms and loft-style bedrooms. The warehouse spaces will be transformed into chic urban lofts with exposed ceilings, massive concrete columns, exposed ductwork, and polished concrete floors, embodying an industrial urban aesthetic.

Original window openings in the brew house building will be restored, while additional windows will be added to the warehouse. Floor-to-ceiling glass infill sections will bridge the gap between the main buildings, distinguishing the contemporary additions from the historic structures. Penthouse units will be added to both buildings' roofs, offering 360-degree views of the Allegheny Valley and Downtown Pittsburgh. These penthouses will feature a clean, modern aesthetic to maximize light, air, and views, marking a new era for the buildings.
