Lumiere

Downtown, Pittsburgh, PA

Status: Completed 2021

Building Type: Mixed-Use

Area: 353,000 SF

Located across from Mellon Square in downtown Pittsburgh, Lumiere is a mixed-use development featuring ground-floor retail, a six-story parking garage, and a seven-story residential condominium tower. It replaces the former Saks Fifth Avenue at Smithfield Street and Oliver Avenue, along with two storefronts on Fifth Avenue. Designed in an L-shape, it wraps around the existing parking building and is adjacent to Piatt Place.

The development's focal point is the corner of Smithfield and Oliver, showcasing a tripartite design. The parking garage is camouflaged with large metal panels and a vertical scrim of aluminum tubes, while a vertical light bar visually connects the garage to the residential tower. Residential units feature projecting balconies and floor-to-ceiling glazing.

The ground-floor retail spaces have large glazing panels and an articulated corner entry for enhanced visibility. The Fifth Avenue façade integrates seamlessly with nearby buildings, clad in corrugated aluminum panels with inset and projecting elements.
