Hampton Inn & Suites

Strip District, Pittsburgh, PA

Status: Completed 2009

Building Type: Hotel

Area: 156,000 SF

This 143-room Hampton Inn and Suites, the first hotel in Pittsburgh's growing Strip District, was designed to occupy minimal land while maximizing functionality. The front setback is minimized to just two car lanes, and a porte cochere extends to the public sidewalk, creating a pedestrian-friendly entrance. An additional drop-off and cab stand lane is provided for convenience.

The eight-story building features a brick and copper facade supported by a staggered steel truss system, which reduces column lines and foundation requirements. The design references the local context, blending industrial warehouse aesthetics with 19th-century brick ornamentation. The steel "eye-bar" supports of the porte cochere draw inspiration from a nearby railroad bridge over the Allegheny River.

Room floors are configured to include at least 22 rooms for serviceability, with generously sized rooms and luxury suites on the top floor. Inboard stair towers maximize daylight and frame views of the Pittsburgh Convention Center. The façade features window mullions that rotate ninety degrees on each floor, adding subtle dynamism and visual interest.
