The Gulf Tower

Downtown, Pittsburgh, PA

Status: In Progress

Building Type: Apartments / Hotel

Area: 605,000  SF

The Gulf Tower, completed in 1932, is a cornerstone of downtown Pittsburgh’s architectural heritage, originally serving as the headquarters for Gulf Oil Corporation. Its Art Deco style and soaring spire have made it a beloved landmark. The recent decision to transform it into a mixed-use hotel and apartment complex aims to revitalize this historic treasure while preserving its unique character.

The renovation emphasizes a balance of preservation and modernization. The original lobby, with its elegant marble and period lighting, will be restored, highlighting historic elevator doors and brass fixtures. New amenities, like a rooftop terrace, will provide modern communal spaces while respecting the tower's historical essence.

Inside, hotel and apartment units will blend contemporary comforts with historic charm. High ceilings and large windows will enhance the grandeur, with modern furnishings complementing original architectural details. The renovation also aims to foster community engagement. The ground floor will feature local shops and cafes, creating a vibrant hub for residents and visitors alike.
