Duquesne Univ. St. Martin Hall
Uptown, Pittsburgh, PA
Status: Completed 2022
Building Type: Student Housing
Area: 108,000 SF
The renovation of St. Martin Residence Hall at Duquesne University, located in the Uptown Bluff neighborhood of Pittsburgh, transformed the 14-story building—originally built in 1961—from a traditional dormitory layout to market-class shared suites. Previously, residential floors featured single or double occupancy rooms with a central shared bathroom core. The renovation involved demolishing this central core and introducing en-suite bathrooms, creating suite-style living. Each unit now includes a full kitchen with a refrigerator, sink, cooktop, and extensive storage.

The vacated central area was repurposed into central amenity spaces on each floor, offering unique features such as gaming rooms, study areas, kitchens, and lounges. The top floor, initially designated for faculty, was connected to the lower floors with a new elevator for accessibility. The ground floor was renovated to include staff offices, a shared conference room, and improved mail and package areas.

Exterior work was unnecessary, as windows had recently been replaced and the masonry veneer and precast concrete panel façade were in good condition. Completed within a single school year, the project added 267 units with a focus on single rooms with shared bathrooms, allowing the university to include the renovated facility in the student housing lottery.
