DLCC Roof Terrace
Downtown, Pittsburgh, PA
Status: Completed 2023
Building Type: Event Space
Area: 50,000 SF
The roof project at The David Lawrence Convention Center in Downtown Pittsburgh involves two main elements: repairing and replacing the 50,000 square feet of failing fourth-floor roof membrane and designing a new terrace.

The initial open-ended program encouraged innovative solutions to create a unique outdoor space for various events while integrating ample green areas. The design divides the ‘T’-shaped roof into four distinct zones: River Plaza, The Boulevard, Light Square, and The Overlook. This layout creates versatile gathering spaces suited for different types of events. For instance, The Boulevard will feature ‘seating pods’ for intimate outdoor settings.

The design focuses on capturing panoramic views of Downtown Pittsburgh, with River Plaza designed for large-scale events. A flexible shading system will protect against sun, rain, and wind while preserving the building’s distinctive architecture.

Landscaping plays a significant role, with pathways on The Boulevard lined with sedum planter beds. The project aims to enhance the David Lawrence Convention Center by adding a vibrant new dimension to the visitor experience.
