Iron City Distilling, part of Pittsburgh Brewing Co., has introduced a rare three-chamber copper still at its Creighton facility. Manufactured by Vendome Copper & Brass Works in Kentucky, this equipment revives a pre-Prohibition method last seen in Pennsylvania over 60 years ago.

The former PPG glass plant along the Allegheny River, merges industrial history with modern distilling. Built in 1883, the site retains original architectural elements like steel-framed windows, exposed brickwork, and soaring ceilings, creating a dramatic setting for the gleaming copper still. Spirits will age for at least three years in a rickhouse designed to complement the facility’s industrial aesthetic.

Historically, three-chamber stills were used to produce Monongahela rye whiskey, known for its rich, complex flavor. The method involves alcohol vapors traveling through three chambers, extracting oils and aromas from the rye mash. The process, once abandoned after Prohibition, is now being revived using Keystone Rosen Rye, a heritage grain grown locally on 250 acres.
