The Great Lakes Education and Research Center (GLERC) is a key component of Gannon University's Project NePTWNE, which stands for Nano & Polymer Technology for Water and Neural-networks in Erie. This initiative aims to enhance Lake Erie's health while balancing conservation and economic growth. Integrated into the Blasco Memorial Public Library, GLERC will feature an Interactive Exhibit Area with hands-on displays about Lake Erie’s ecosystem, an interactive floor map, a 3D relief table showing real-time lake data, and a large monitor with information on the Great Lakes and global freshwater systems. Books related to these topics will also be available for checkout.

NOAA's Science on a Sphere will offer environmental data and simulations on a 3D globe in a noise-controlled glass room, which will also display local art and Project NePTWNE’s key messages.
The research facilities include a wet lab for specimen preparation and a flexible research room with mobile workstations for various scientific activities.

GLERC will support Project NePTWNE’s efforts to address environmental challenges like microplastics pollution, enhance freshwater resource preservation, and contribute to the Erie region’s blue economy. The center will be open to the public and library staff, serving as a hub for education and environmental stewardship.
